Personal Statement

The joy of making things by hand and a sense of bringing materials to life is what I love about jewellery making.

I work intuitively and in response to exquisite textures and forms in nature,

creating art to be worn and enjoyed by others.

The innovative use of materials by contemporary Japanese fashion and textile artists continues to inspire and inform my work.

I collect and draw without knowing exactly how the information will be used.

I am most fluent when working with my hands, and feel a natural affinity with materials from a lifetime working in paper and card, fabric, plastics, wood and metal. I love to use traditional jeweller’s hand tools. I am a passionate advocate of contemporary applied arts and value high quality craftsmanship.

I am excited by the endless possibilities of working in gold and silver. Both are wonderfully ductile and can be melted, fused, rolled, compressed and drawn out.

I work experimentally, exploiting these unique properties. A design grows out of the material, evolves in response to the process and comes to its own natural conclusion.

Whilst the processes are carefully controlled and refined, there are lively, unpredictable elements and an openness to chance and happy accidents.

The outcome is essentially an abstract piece informed by observation and formed through an understanding of materials and processes.

I aspire to produce jewellery that is sensuous and tactile with strong, simple forms that celebrate the beauty and unique qualities inherent in the materials.

Sustainability

Each item of jewellery is designed and crafted in an artisan workshop using traditional hand-tools and processes ensuring that no two pieces are identical.

Fine quality materials are carefully selected to support responsible mining and make a difference to miners and their communities. These include FAIRTRADE gold, Eco silver and certified diamonds.

Small scale hand production methods are employed which have little impact on the environment. All workshop chemicals are biodegradable and all waste products are recycled.

Be assured this is unique hand-made jewellery designed to last and created with a conscience.
